What kind of training/education do Chiropractors have?
Chiropractic Physicians have six to eight years of college education, which puts them among the top professions that have more education and training than 97% of the US population (US Census Bureau, 2010). Most practitioners hold a bachelor’s degree, and like other professional schools (dentistry, medicine, pharmacy), all students must have completed extensive pre-requisite undergraduate courses prior to enrollment (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biology, etc). Chiropractors receive an education that emphasizes broad diagnostic skills and treatment, alongside training in rehabilitative exercise and nutritional/dietary lifestyle counseling. Included in the final year is a year-long formal internship, which must be completed prior to graduation and before one is considered fully trained. To become licensed, chiropractors must pass rigorous national and state board exams, and must annually earn continuing education credits to maintain their licenses.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and their affects on general health. Chiropractic emphasizes that given the right environment and mobility the body has the ability to heal itself. Chiropractic uses spinal adjustments alongside massage and exercise to restore restricted joint motion, decrease muscle spasm, and decrease pain to a specific area. Pain and illness is on the rise due to many environmental factors such as toxic substances, sedentary jobs, postural issues, and diet/nutrition. With a more stable environment the body can maintain proper mechanics to take away stress and allow proper healing. Chiropractic stems from the Greek work chiro-praktikos which means “effective treatment by hand.”
What is Chiropractic used for?
Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints such as neck/back pain, pain in the joints of the arm/legs, headaches, and nerve pain. Although chiropractic is used for these types of conditions, studies have also found it to be effective for a variety of conditions such as migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, infantile colic, gastrointestinal issues, and much more.
Does Chiropractic hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments rarely cause discomfort. Most patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, however some may experience mild soreness the following day (much like soreness after exercising) that resolves within 12 to 48 hours.
What makes that “popping” sound?
The “popping” noise noticed during adjustments is merely carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas releasing from within the joint fluid after going from a high pressure to a low pressure. This painless noise causes immediate relief by releasing natural pain killers, Endorphins and Enkephalins, into the adjusted area. The adjustment also relaxes surrounding musculature and increases blood flow to the area to aid healing.
Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. In fact, chiropractic malpractice insurance is far less than any other physician type. Chiropractic adjustments are an incredibly safe and effective procedure that help patient’s get back on their feet faster than traditional medical care.
Are there studies that Support Chiropractic?
There are many well-designed studies that have shown the effectiveness of chiropractic in relieving back pain, neck pain, etc. More recent studies have shown chiropractic to be effective in treating infantile colic and migraine headaches. Coming from University of Western States (UWS), we use the most up-to-date and well-researched treatments. In fact, UWS does some of the most current evidence-based research on low back pain and chiropractic treatments.
How often will I have to come?
Every patient is unique and therefore every treatment plan is catered to your presenting complaint, age, and so forth. Rarely is anyone recommended to come more than two to three times in their first week. Furthermore, no treatment plan is written in stone and as you continue to improve then the frequency of visits will decrease. We are happy to report that most of our patients experience relief within the first week or two of treatment.
Once I see a Chiropractor, do I have to go forever?
Absolutely not! It is our goal to help you get better as fast as possible. It is your goals that drive treatment. Outcome markers will determine if you want to get out of pain or you want to obtain preventative care to help decrease the risk of relapse of your current conditions. Often times it takes several visits to make significant change, but if it only takes one visit then that’s all you will be recommended.
Will I have to get X-Rays?
We do not take X-Rays at our clinic, but if you have them please bring them in for us to review. After your initial exam the doctor will determine whether or not X-Rays are warranted, however in most cases they are not. If you are referred for X-Rays, then we can recommend several radiology clinics close to our office where you can have the films taken.
Do you work with medical doctors?
Yes, we work hand-in-hand with medical doctors in order to get our patients the most benefit. In many cases, such as spinal pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. However, when other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition. We will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when a patient’s condition warrants co-management. You must remember that our mission is “to do no harm” and look out for the best interest of the patient, which includes working with other health care professionals to make sure every patient gets the proper care they deserve.
